Wednesday March 12 2008 DONATO MANCINI - AETHEL - New Star Books 2007 I had the good fortune to run into concrete poet and 'pataphysical impressario Donato Mancini this week. I've now finally aquired a copy of his fantastic new book with NewStar, AEthel - following-up his 2005 Ligatures. I've been anticipating the arrival of this volume since Donato and I became first acquinted c.1998 - he shared some of these type-drawings with me on one of our earliest meetings - any lover of graphic design and visual poetry will shudder with spastic delight when paging through Donato's fractious, sonorous, hilariously elegant typographic constructions. When I met him, Donato claimed to be naive of the visual poetry tradition developed in Toronto around the CoachHouse 'pataphysicians Christian Bok, Darren Wershler-Henry, Christopher Dewdney, Steve McCaffery, BPNichol,... and of the laurels he should wear amidst those authors... at the time I was tremendously excited to have 'found' what seemed like such a rare thing - a great 'pataphysical talent growing untended in BC - maybe we could build a western tower, a Vancouver 'pataphysics could emerge and make international contribution to this most exciting of poetical phenomena. Donato had seemingly intuitively found his way from musical composition to backflips on the narrow beam of concrete language poetry even before he knew there was such a game. I've been anticipating and coveting this volume since way before it went to press, so big thanks to New Star Books for recognizing a significant talent in Donato Mancini, and big ups to Donato for assiging his considerable wits to the penurious task of bending language's rule with its own levers. Friday March 14 2008 A440Hz Electromagnetic Explorations Thinking about my friends Joel Snowden and Celia King today and their project A440Hz --- they last year started a Vancouver artists' collective venture, pursuing dialogue among artists and physicists on the marvels of electromagnetism and the principles of harmonic resonance... Joel's been blowing minds all over town, including those of the the brainiacs at Science World, who have proposed to host an installation in some coming future. I've told this story dozens of times: to demonstrate his concept, Joel drew a diagram on the 80 feet of walls in their gallery, detailing the relative bandwidths and various vibratory strata of the electromagnetic spectrum - bandwitdths delegated for radio, cel communications, sattellite, military bands, then cosmic rays at one edge down to the vibratory structures of matter at the other - extrapolating E=MC2 into the atomic resonances of the periodic table. Around one third of the way down the wall was an eight inch painted rainbow. This represented the visible spectrum of light. At around one fifth, a ten inch wave described the audible band. These sparse and separated eighteen inches, excised from the eighty feet of available information, described the outer edges of what most of us 'know' to exist, receptible to our two most culturally privileged senses. What else might be happening out there there beyond the edges of conventional perception. And what if privatizing bandwidths for cel phone communication was impinging on a spectra used by other organisms to communicate or coordinate -- like for example, the bees, who now can't seem to find their ways home around cel towers...
