AUXIN Sound Art by Steve Calvert
annual audio collections
AUXIN is Improvisatory Electro-Acoustic Noisic. Analogous to music, the resemblance is superficial. Nothing is planned nor played twice: all tracks are spontaneous improvised free-jams with fx-decks, voice, percussion emulators, peizo-drum, effected microphoes, 80s toy keyboards, modulated multieffects feedback, and limited secondary editing.

Jotunheim is formalist experimental pure-noise: output of closed-loop line-noise effected-feedback recursive-mixer arrangements. Noise drones. Olympians is acoustic guitar+voice, improvised, relatively uneffected. Steppenlocust is electric guitar, voice and drum machine/sampler. Shapeshifter are prep-jams for a collab with Sorcerers.

Summer 2010 introduces new bots to the menagerie: linux hydrogen step sequence drum emulator, and three pre-midi 80s yamaha and casio synthesizers. Creative constraints loosened a little, this year I expand the armorarium. ;']

  JOTUNHEIM

JOTUNHEIM - (2005-ongoing)

: Experimental explorations in Layered FX feedback - pure noise audio circuit loops - internally reflexive sonic texture, line-noise modulations generated by eq-twiddling auxiliary signal loops, multi-effects processors daisy-chained into variably stochastic interference systems... the most arty of my sound projects, nearest conceptually to my device-based visual constructions: sympathetic ryhthmic procedural systems; the collision parametrics of electrical interference: emergent entrainments rise out from crashing noise waves, shaped by a modular mathematics, a protean sonic turbulence; studies in psionic projection and interpolation. Attention multiplier. :

OLYMPIANS - 2007 on

acoustic guitar and vox improvisations

: Solo improvisational acoustic guitar and voice sans fx [some cases of pitch-neutral time-accelleration in post]. Guitar-vox simultenaity as musical personal challenge 2007... for giggles... recordings made mostly in the middle of the night - compelled to let the energy out, attempting not to waking the neighbors, suppressive tension produces stylistic constraint. :

  STEPPENLOCUST

Steppenlocust [1996-2009] - early 4-track recordings

Locust, the title for my first multitrack voice, electric guitar, drum machine, and found sound experiments, c.1996-2001. SteppenLocust continues that project, as the name gathered fame elsewhere for much harder noise applications.

SOUND SELECTION

pluto

AUXIN, Jotunheim, Olympians, and Steppenlocust are four solo-audio projects produced by Steve Calvert. Formerly playing as one quarter of Intermission Stereo, and one-fourteenth of the Mercury Theatre Orchestra, SC was also a contributing player in Donkey Engine, Chief Broom, Fence, Pelt, Wall of Noise, on voice and drums, from 1990.

Presented here are selected explorations in one-man-band-home-recording: two-track multi-instrumental improvisations, cut with minimal secondary editing. Spontaneous sketches in sound, engaging al 'pata-practice of pseudo-musical trance-automatism documentation, wherein "getting out of my own way" helps me to understand that "only the mistakes are mine"...

I play now for exercise, and record for personal exploration, emotional reflection, and practice of habit. As such these are not songs but musical drawings, unpracticed improv jams, and should be marked clearly as sketches, ideations in process: dimensions variable. I share them just because we can do that now and it feels worthwhile. They function sufficiently for the artist, with or without completion or audience. That said, remix and performance collaborations are naturally welcomed, should such projects raise interest; please just get in touch:
