AUXIN

AUXIN, Jotunheim, Olympians, and Steppenlocust are four solo-audio projects produced by Steve Calvert. Formerly playing as one quarter of Intermission Stereo, and one-fourteenth of the Mercury Theatre Orchestra, SC was also a contributing player in Donkey Engine, Chief Broom, Fence, Pelt, Wall of Noise, on voice or drums, beginning in 1990.

Presented here are selected explorations in the one-man-band-home-studio tradition: two-track multi-instrument improvisations with minimal secondary editing. Spontaneous sketches in sound, engaging in a para-musical 'pata-practice of trance-automatism wherein "getting out of my own way" reveals that "only the mistakes are mine" --

Disclaimer: Exclusively a bedroom-musican of late [2006-09] I play and record for exercise, personal exploration, emotional growth, and practice of habit... As such they are not songs but musical doodles, unmastered, and should be marked clearly as sketches, ideation in process, dimensions variable. I share them just because we can do that now - they function sufficiently with or without 'completion', or audience... remix and performance collaborations are welcome, if such projects raise interest... please just get in touch ....

AUXIN are near-musical improvisations in effected vox and open-metric syncopation, with peizo-electronic-drums and effects-feedback .

JOTUNHEIM : experimental explorations in pure audio feedback - formalist sonic texture generated by amplifying auxiliary line noise in signal loops, daisy-chained multi-effects processors and other stochastic interference systems... the most art-like of my sound projects, and nearest conceptually akin to the visual work... systemsemergent from interference waves, shaped by modular parameters...

Olympians : solo improvisational acoustic guitar and voice sans fx [some cases of pitch-neutral time-accelleration in post]. Guitar music personal challenge 2007... for giggles... recordings made mostly in the middle of the night - compelled to let the energy out, attempting not to waking the neighbors, a hushed tension becomes the guiding stylistic constraint...

Locust was the title for my first multitrack voice, electric guitar, drum machine, and found sound experiments, c.1996-2001. Steppenlocust continues the project, since the name became more famous elsewhere.

Also, new this year to public realms, Auxin reveals a fifth identity, Mp3J Cdëv has been producing mixed-tape selections since 1983. In contributing to the rationale of gift economies, Cdev provides musical research and sound curation for art exhibitions, dance choreographers, cinematic sound designers, juried music-festival invitationals, cafe dj sets and street parties. Lo-fi for the hi-strung...
