Julie Gendron was one of eight interdisciplinarians to found the Intermission Artist Society. Her strength of character and startling array of skillsets lent great stability and scope to the IM milieu. Bringing her fresh technological savvy, shrewd negotiations and sleek style to the table - with Jules aboard, we always knew the show was gonna be good... Julie has the eyes of a painter, though she would insist, they are in fact the wrists of a web designer... She also has attention-arresting design skills as Desiring Productions, has immaculate chops as live-mix projection visuals jockey, proficient capacities as sound-and-light installation sculptor, web-project manager, artists collective director, college media arts instructor, VIVO media arts center programming director... the list runs on... she can even slay a dancefloor as DJ Wave! Yeah okay you get the idea she's polymathic and brilliant at it... so who's surprised that she's also a sublime photographer?... The photos in this series, Scene, have elsewhere appeared as components in Julie's traveling talent circus - they were selected by Calvair from Julie's flickr collections... Reflecting on Cameraman's urban cubist provocations reminded me of the abstract formal elegance of Julie's palimpsest photographs - recalling Rothko's color field paintings, her graffiti-buffed back-alley walls selections... These photos had established the tone for the collaborative dialogue we'd had on abstraction in photography for Intermission's Event photo exhibition in 2004 - in association with Blim and the then-proto-Blanket... With Julie's permission, we re-present them here, to celebrate the strength and sensitivity of her vision, and to implicate her contribution to linking new foundations for abstraction and photo-conceptualism in local new media event aesthetics ... You've really got to see her do projection visuals sometime - Franz Kline, eat your heart out... Julie's whimsically concerned about being the first technical non-bachelor to join the collection... regrettable semantics, I assured her, our titular gender is the inconvenience of vestigial Franglais - we're only accidentally dudes, so far and no longer, suffering the statistical biases of art-geekery - gender is performance, anyways... Jules and Cdev once lolled naked in a snowy forest with six other hairless monkeys for three days - it was Edenic, and there are pictures... I told that naked story just to put us all at ease --- Julie rocks. |
