After years away, making a place for himself in the history of painting amidst the luminaries of 80's New York, Barcelona, Amsterdam... Peter Schuyff returned home to Vancouver for a few years in the early 00s, where his meticulous geometrical paintings, gorgeous helical carvings, romantic melancholia and hysterical good company helped rise to momentary public prominence the latest swelling wave of abstract conceptualism flaring in the nostrils of young impresarios these days. His timing was ideal, for us if not for him... Peter's bon-vivance, irascible wit, and charmed influence in the cultural scene lent gravitas, momentum and cosmopolitan zeal to the procedural directions which many working here in the colonies were already pursuant. Nick Pittman, Eli Bornowsky, Robert Mearns, Charlie Roberts, Adam Dodd, Laura Piasta, Shayne Ehman, Aurel Schmidt ... many emerging talents found new potential in their painting, thanks I think in part to Peter's seasoned infusion of enthusiasm, erudition, and generous friendship... not coincidentally, with the significant inclusion of Neil Campbell - [ who blows our minds, incidentally ] - most of the talents just mentioned now show with the Vancouver / LA Blanket Gallery... these producers, and Blanket, remain steady interests and sturdy investments as they continue to draw covetous attention from international collectors of contemporary abstractions... Peter's deft capacities and skillfully ease with drawing, strings, painting, carving, elocution and ribaldry, marks him as a conspicuously proficient intermedian and polymath. Working prolifically with procedural simulations and parlor magic for three decades, his work, insights, and camaraderie are deeply important to this collection. Peter's contribution to the forum is well revered by the members of Bachelor Machines and Intermission... Some time ago, Peter left in my care this collection of scans of his Bathing Venus after Raphael Peale - an impressive and funny series of gouache detournements, working over a photocopy of a Peale's 18th c. bath-drapery painting... I am delighted at last to have opportunity and approval to show them here... Peter Schuyff - Venus After Her Bath, After Raphael Peale A casual surf through his other two- and three-dimensional procedural works delivers immediate edification in a beguiling array of themes and modes... giggles of surprise and delight will reward the foray, we assure... The difinitive collection of images online can be viewed at his own schuyff.com. Locally, Peter shows work with the Vancouver / LA Blanket Gallery. He also has representation in cities abroad - more links are available, and soon to follow... in the mean time, there's google... [080425_SWC] |
